ABOUT
Embark on a spiritual journey through the historical and religious landscapes of South India. Together we’ll explore ancient Christian traditions through the lens of St. Thomas, the apostle who brought Christianity to the subcontinent. We’ll reflect on the struggle for liberation and justice among Indians led by Mahatma Gandhi who inspired Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to make his own pilgrimage to India. We’ll also connect with contemporary church leaders who are preaching the gospel and working for justice today. Along the way we’ll experience the cultural and natural heritage of South India.
The pilgrimage begins in Kochi, exploring the historic Muziris region, where St. Thomas is believed to have arrived in 52 CE. Visit ancient churches, such as the St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Church, and witness Kerala’s vibrant traditions, including a Kathakali performance and a serene backwater cruise. Travel south to Thiruvananthapuram, delving into India’s diverse cultural landscape with visits to the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, local museums, and an elephant sanctuary. In Chennai, discover the stunning Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram, reflect on the profound legacy of St. Thomas at the St. Thomas Caves and Basilica, and meet with contemporary church leaders. Throughout the journey, time is set aside for worship and reflection, offering pilgrims an opportunity to make soulful connections that deepen faith and offer fresh resources for preaching. This itinerary offers a glance at what you can expect on your pilgrimage. Schedule may be adjusted for efficiency and guide availability.
