Also known as the Kotel, the Western Wall is all that remains of an ancient wall that surrounded the King Herod’s Temple from the first century CE (Second Temple period). Generally considered a building project of Herod the Great, recent evidence suggests that the wall was not finished before Herod’s death. With the exception of the Temple Mount, the Wall is the most holy place of modern Judaism. Jews and non-Jews are invited to approach the Wall and pray. Men and women are separated and modest dress is required out of respect for the significance of the Wall.
