April 27-30, 2023

The Sacred Land, Sacred Stories Pilgrimage is a journey from sin, to repentance, and finally to reconciliation. We explore slavery, white supremacy, racism, and Jim Crow on this pilgrimage from Winston-Salem to Montgomery and Selma. Most importantly, we will think together about how to bring the values of equality and justice home with us. The full itinerary is available below. Please click on the bold headings to expand the details for each day.

Thursday, April 27, 2023 | Depart Winston–Salem

Your private motocoach departs from St. Paul’s in the morning, headed to Montgomery, Alabama. Lunch en route (on your own.) Welcome dinner (included) and introductory conversation with your Montgomery guide. Overnight at Staybridge Suites, Downtown Montgomery.

Friday, April 28, 2023 | Montgomery and Selma

Begin your pilgrimage with a sobering and humbling look at the sins of slavery, white supremacy, and racism with a visit to the Equal Justice Initiative’s museum and lynching memorial. Following lunch, the theme shifts repentance and liberation as we travel to Selma to visit Brown Chapel AME Church and complete a prayer walk from the church to the Edmund Pettus Bridge. You’ll be led by Ronald Smith and Gwen Brown of New Way Revolution, an organization engaged in the work of non-violence, reconciliation, and racial justice. Return to Montgomery for dinner (on your own) and overnight accommodations.

Saturday, April 29, 2023 | Montgomery

This morning, we tour significant sites in Montgomery’s Civil Rights history including Rosa Parks museum and Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and learn about the lesser-known figures in the Montgomery movement led by Wanda Battle. In the afternoon, meet together with your group to debrief your experiences. Dinner (on your own) and overnight in Montgomery.

Sunday, April 30, 2023 | Montgomery to Winston-Salem

We conclude our journey worshiping with a local congregation in Montgomery. After worship and lunch, we will return to Winston-Salem by motorcoach. Expect to arrive after 10:00pm.
