Celtic Scotland Pilgrimage

This 10-day journey explores Celtic culture, spirituality, and the Episcopal history of Scotland. Highlights include: three days exploring Glasgow, including a visit to Whithorn, the oldest Christian community in Scotland; a full day on Iona, site of St. Columba’s monastery; a day in Lindisfarne, known as the Holy Island. The pilgrimage includes multiple opportunities for worship including in Scotland’s oldest Episcopal church.

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 | Depart Savannah

The group departs Savannah International Airport at 3:14pm on United 3619 to Newark, continuing on United 36 to Edinburgh.

Thursday, September 8, 2022 | Arrival in Scotland, transfer to Glasgow

We arrive in Edinburgh at 8:05am and transfer to Glasgow by private coach. We will transfer to Glasgow where we start our pilgrimage by learning more about the Iona Community, headquartered in Glasgow. After lunch (included), we visit Govan Church, home of the Govan Stones – carved stones, crosses, and sarcophagi dating to the Viking period in Scotland. After a little time to rest, we will celebrate the start of our pilgrimage with a Welcome Dinner. Overnight in Glasgow.

Friday, September 9, 2022 | Whithorn

We depart Glasgow in the morning to visit Whithorn, the oldest Christian community in Scotland. We will visit the Priory, Museum, Chapel, and Caves before returning to Glasgow for dinner at the hotel (included). Overnight in Glasgow.

Saturday, September 10, 2022 | Glasgow

We’ll start our day with a visit to Glasgow Cathedral and a walking tour of the city including lunch, before returning to our hotel. You have the rest of the afternoon free to explore Glasgow. Dinner on your own. Overnight in Glasgow.

Sunday, September 11, 2022 | Travel to Fionnphort

As today is Sunday, we will begin with morning worship at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow. From there we will stop at Auchentoschan Distillery for a tour and tasting. We arrive in Oban with some free time before catching the ferry to the Isle of Mull. Dinner will be aboard the ferry. Driving across the island to our base of Fionnphort, we will arrive at our B&Bs for the evening.

Monday, September 12, 2022 | Iona/Fionnphort

We take the first ferry across to Iona, arriving in time for morning worship at The Abbey. The morning includes a guided tour of the Abbey and other ruins on Iona, concluding with a celebration of the Eucharist. In the afternoon, you are free to explore Iona and return to Fionnphort by ferry at your discretion. We will enjoy at catered dinner together including traditional Scottish music. Overnight in Fionnphort.

Tuesday, September 13, 2022 | Fionnphort to Edinburgh

We depart for Edinburgh, arriving in time to check in to our hotels, rest, or shop before celebrating the Eucharist or Evensong (worship schedule TBD) at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. After worship, we’ll dine together at our Edinburgh hotel.

Wednesday, September 14, 2022 | Lindisfarne

From Edinburgh we will make a day trip to Lindisfarne, also known as the Holy Island. We’ll visit the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Church of England) and visit the Castle and Priory at Lindisfarne. We will return to Edinburgh in time for dinner (on you own).

Thursday, September 15, 2022 | Edinburgh

Today, we explore Edinburgh proper, with visits to John Knox’s home and burial site, St. Giles’ Cathedral, and Old St. Paul’s, an Epsicopal congregation formed by a breakaway group from St. Giles’. We then visit Holyroodhouse Palace and Abbey. Your afternoon is free, allowing time to visit the Museum of Scotland, explore the city, or relax before dinner. We’ll regroup for our closing dinner in Edinburgh before returning to our hotel for the evening.

Friday, September 16, 2022 | Depart for US

Our flight to the US departs at 12:30pm, so you have a bit of time to sleep in or do some last minute shopping before the bus departs for the airport. We leave on United 979 to Dulles and after a brief layover, we land in Savannah at 6:48pm.

What’s Included

The cost for this pilgrimage is $4,400 per person, double occupancy. Single occupancy is available for a surcharge of $575. Group size is limited to 22 travelers.

A $500/person deposit is due at time of registration, payable online via credit card. The deadline to register is May 10, 2022 though we cannot guarantee space, as the group is limited to 22 travelers. Full payment is due by July 1, 2022. Participants will be invoiced for the balance due which may be paid by check, ACH, or credit card. Credit card payments of the remaining balance will incur a 3% fee.
